Darren Bousman on “The Bird With the Crystal Plumage”

Mar 8, 2013
Trailer 862 of 894

Dario Argento's acclaimed directorial debut emerged from a successful writing career that encompassed everything from movie criticism to contributions to westerns like Five Man Army and Once Upon a Time in the West. He enlisted his father, producer Salvatore Argento, to help fund what would become a landmark in the Italian giallo genre, whose origins many link to Mario Bava's The Girl Who Knew Too Much (Evil Eye in its alternate US version). Although there are also echoes of Bava's Blood and Black Lace, much of the plot is inspired by Fredric Brown's novel The Screaming Mimi (filmed by Gerd Oswald in 1958). Coproduced with Germany's CCC Films which expected an Edgar Wallace style thriller and was put off by the level of violence. Ennio Morricone's score is disturbingly sexy.

I had the fortune of seeing Poison Ivy in the theatre (albeit a second-run dollar theatre) during its original release. I think I saw a trailer for it at a showing of Bill Duke's Deep Cover, and I think Poison Ivy only played for a week first-run...

Like swac, I saw Vertigo in the theatre during the '80s when Universal re-released five Hitchcock movies that had been taken out of circulation. As I recall, I got lost for a bit when Scotty started following the brunette woman midway through the movie, and I was startled when the Universal globe came up at the end with no reckoning for the villain My response was something along the lines of "That's it? I thought bad guys had to be caught or killed under the Hayes Office...
